The Blood Bank began recruiting donors from a Sertoma Club’s membership list and the donor database consisted of a shoe box of notecards. The hospital had an abundance of diapers that year, so donors, whom the Blood Bank lovingly nicknamed “expectant fathers”, were given a box of Pampers with each donation.
Since then, the Dak-Minn Blood Bank has grown and evolved as it moved from St. Mike’s unit of United Hospital near UND then to the Altru Hospital. At the end of 2013 Dak-Minn Blood Bank moved to their current location on DeMers Avenue. But one thing that hasn’t changed is our mission to collect and maintain a safe and adequate blood supply for the Greater Grand Forks community.
Today, the Blood Bank collects about 4500 units each year for area patients. We are registered and licensed by the Food and Drug Administration and accredited by AABB (formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks, and the College of American Pathologists (CAP). These organizations recognize the Dak-Minn Blood Bank’s commitment to providing safe and high-quality blood products. Proceed here to view our Accreditations and Licenses.
