Blood Drives

Blood drives are a great way for us to bring the Blood Bank to you! About twice per month, between September and June, we travel to schools, businesses, or organizations in the community to collect blood donations. In 2006 we collected over 730 units from blood drives, alone. Hosting a blood drive is a great way to boost teamwork, philanthropy and community involvement within an organization. Starting 2010 off right! So did you make donating blood 6 times a year, your newest New Year’s Resolution? If not make it today and invite a friend or family member to tag along and donate too! What  better way to get away and chat with a friend, donate together; have coffee and a donut on us!   January is National Blood Donor Month – so it’s now or never, make that call and schedule those appointments! Before we reach the age of 72, 95% of us will need blood or a blood product. Altru patients rely on ordinary people like you to give them the lifesaving blood they need to survive. Give blood, and encourage your peers to give blood by letting them know they’ll make a real difference in the lives of others. Together we can all make a difference.   Do you have a story to tell? Have you ever needed a blood transfusion? Has someone close to you needed blood? If you know someone who is willing to share their story, please contact Julie Jenson at jjenson@altru.org. It’s a great way to let people know who they may be helping when they give blood.   Some amazing people donate blood, did you know accident victims use 4-100 units of red blood cells and someone undergoing cancer treatment uses 2-6 units of red blood cells and 6-8 units of platelets daily for 2-4 weeks, not to mention that patients with sickle cell disease need periodic transfusions of 10-15 units of red blood cells to treat complications. Many people need it; so please give to maintain our local supply.
